In an essential step towards carrying out the NEP, the Delhi Directorate of Education has set up a pre-vocational education programme for students from Classes 6 to 8 in government schools in the academic year 2025–26. The Kaushal Bodh programme will begin as an individual subject for Class 6 in its initial phase and will extend to Classes 7 and 8 step by step in the following years.
The initiative aims to help students with vocational knowledge and life skills early in their academic journey. The curriculum lines up with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 and lies under 3 key categories - Work with Life Forms, Work in Human Services, Work with Machines and Materials. Every year, students will finish 3 projects, one from each category.
Under this programme, the students shall be engaged in practices such as pottery, organic farming, carpentry, embroidery, low-voltage electrical work and cooking with millet. Instructors will also make sure students carry out the tasks safely, utilise learning in practical situations and work in groups. The activities of the students will be assessed through oral presentations, activity record books, written exams, teacher observations and portfolios.
The curriculum grants 110 hours annually for these vocational activities, allowing for consistent assessment and engagement. The Education Department has directed school heads to take care of project implementation, integrate vocational education into the daily school environment and support teacher training. Regular subject teachers will direct students through the skill-based curriculum, connect academic concepts to practical applications, and assess progress.
To encourage students' learning, the department will conduct Kaushal Melas, where students deliver their projects and are involved in live demos under expert advice.
