Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity: New Norms Set by Education Ministry

In a groundbreaking move, the Education Ministry has called for a paradigm shift in the way schools approach diversity and inclusivity. The recently introduced norms aim to create an educational environment that celebrates differences and ensures equal opportunities for all students. The guidelines recommend culturally and socially accommodating curricula along with teacher training to support all students, as well as equipping resource centres with assistive devices.

The key directives from the Education Ministry emphasise the importance of fostering a culture of inclusivity within schools. From promoting diverse perspectives in curriculum design to implementing measures that accommodate varying learning needs, the guidelines set a robust framework for educational institutions. The guidelines have been focused on including children from socioeconomically disadvantaged groups that are further categorised based on their gender identities, sociocultural identities, disabilities, geographical identities and economic conditions.

The main objective is to develop a sense of belongingness, respect and acceptance of diversity by identifying and fostering the capabilities of every individual. These norms challenge stereotypes and encourage schools to be proactive in eliminating discrimination. Beyond giving priority to the accessible infrastructure in schools to promote inclusivity, the guidelines also recommended that the schools should also ensure timely distribution of proper aids and appliances, their repair and maintenance, as well as reissue in case of damage or loss. The guidelines also stressed on the capacity building of teachers and the collaboration of schools with NGOs and organisations working in the areas of health, education, and social welfare.
