Kochi Schools Introduce Emojis To Replace Marks for Evaluation

In Kochi, several CBSE schools have introduced a unique approach to assessing students, replacing traditional marks with emojis. This new evaluation system, which applies to pre-KG to Class 2 students, aims to make learning less stressful and more engaging. Instead of relying on written exams, students are assessed based on their activities, with visual symbols such as clapping hands, stars, or trophies used to provide feedback. School authorities have noted positive reactions to this approach, bringing out its ability to motivate and create memorable learning experiences.

A teacher from a CBSE school in Kochi highlighted that emojis could have a stronger impact, especially in reinforcing positive feedback, making it more exciting for children. The system aligns with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to reduce the pressure of high-stakes exams and rote learning, focusing instead on practical skills, critical thinking, and conceptual understanding. The NEP also promotes continuous assessment and the flexibility of curriculum choices.

T.P. Ibrahim Khan, president of the CBSE Management Association, also supported the initiative, noting its potential to enhance students' skills and self-esteem. While the initiative has been welcomed, Khan clarified that CBSE has not yet mandated its implementation across all schools.
