Karnataka Launches Astronomy Access Initiative in Residential Schools

On November 29, Karnataka's Science and Technology Department officially launched the "Astronomy Access Initiative," equipping 833 residential schools under the Social Welfare Department with telescopes. The initiative, aimed at creating scientific curiosity among students, was first proposed in January 2024, approved in the state budget, and allocated Rs.3 crore for 2024-25. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who presented the budget, handed over the first 30 telescopes to school authorities at the launch event.

Science Minister N.S. Boseraju stressed the government’s loyalty to cultivating scientific temper, stating, “This initiative encourages stargazing and critical thinking among students, particularly in rural areas, by providing grassroots access to astronomical tools.” The telescopes will primarily serve Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KRIES) schools but will also be accessible to nearby institutions. The program mandates an annual 10-day observation and learning schedule dedicated to astronomy, encouraging students to explore celestial phenomena.

Officials revealed plans for comprehensive teacher training sessions to ensure effective equipment use. The department also intends to compensate participating teachers independently, without relying on education department funds. This phase focuses on taluk-level residential schools, with expansion to other schools planned in the future. The Astronomy Access Initiative is part of Karnataka’s broader efforts, led by CM Siddaramaiah and DCM D.K. Shivakumar, to promote scientific learning and public engagement, marking a significant step towards uplifting young minds with curiosity-driven education.
