What Does the Himachal Phone Ban Mean for Schools in India?


S.S. Sukhu, the CM of Himachal Pradesh, on 5.2.2026, declared a full prohibition on students using phones in all private and govt. schools throughout Himachal, effective from 1.3.2026. The CM mentioned that the state govt. is offering quality education that enables students to compete globally, while addressing the gathering.

The CM outlined rigid enforcement stating, mentioning that authorities will fine students carrying a phone 500 rupees and seize the device. He also included that schools will need parents to attend compulsory guidance sessions. The Education Department will announce a Standard Operating Procedure to manage repeated violations to ensure sustained compliance.

He mentioned that mobile phone use during school hours draws attention from interpersonal growth and academics. CM Sukhu confirmed his devotion to enhancing the quality of learning, citing his background as a govt. school alumnus.

He emphasises the state’s push to encourage sports and sports tourism as well. The CM declared that the govt. will offer employment options to female athletes from Himachal who recently finished in the Asian Games. He also declared a cash prize of 20 lakh rupees to celebrate the Himachal team’s success in the National Handball Championship.

CM Sukhu presented various infrastructure targets during the event, including finishing the indoor stadium in Ghumarwin and the local school building by next year. He declared plans to build a new girls’ hostel at Morsingi.

The 69th National School Games ended with the Himachal team winning the gold medal after defeating Rajasthan in the finals, while the state ensured third prize. The tournament featured other teams taking part from 30 teams countrywide.
