The Uttar Pradesh government has established a new scheme that offers an annual travel allowance of Rs 6,000 to students residing at least 5 km away from their schools in a greater move to enhance access to education. By this initiative, the government aims to simplify travel troubles for students in remote areas of Sonbhadra and 6 Bundelkhand districts, supporting them to attend their secondary schools without any difficulties.
Students from Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Jalaun, Mahoba, Sonbhadra, Banda, and Hamirpur will get Rs 6,000 annually if they reside 5 km away or more from the nearest secondary school under the scheme. The benefit is available for students from classes 9 to 12 and starts with the current academic session, providing relief to thousands of students facing long-distance travel.
1. Direct Fund Transfer
The government will invest the annual aid into students bank accounts directly via Direct Benefit Transfer. The first instalment could be disbursed as early as September 5, based on the plan. From 146 government schools, girl students selected under the Pradhan Mantri School Vikas Yojana will get the travel allowance as well. The government assures extended support for girls, particularly in underserved and rural areas.
2. Application and Verification Procedure
To claim the advantage, students must fill out a self-declaration form (pro forma) supporting the non-availability of a government secondary school within 5 km of their houses. The Gram Pradhan department will check these resolutions at the village stage, as school principals will carry out school-level evaluation. Local councillors will manage the verification procedure, and once evaluated and sanctioned, qualified students will start getting the travel allowance in urban areas.
3. Attendance-Based Consideration
Students must keep regular attendance and show at least a 10 percentage at least to continue getting the advantage. This stage promotes not just access but discipline and greater student engagement as well. The scheme will aid around 24,000 students in Sonbhadra and Bundelkhand, and 4,000 girl students from PM Shri schools will get travel assistance.
The government rewards its dedication to boosting enrolment, improving attendance and eliminating barriers to education, especially in underserved and most remote locations of the state, by rolling out this initiative.
