How NCERT Textbooks Align with NEP 2020 & NCF 2023?

Curriculum reforms for the academic cycle 2026 have been released by NCERT, and they bring in revised chapters, new textbooks, vocational subjects and fresh learning modules aligned with the NCF 2023 & NEP 2020. NCERT aims to transform classrooms away from rote memorisation towards competency-based learning.

How NCERT Textbooks Align with NEP 2020

History Curriculum Revisions

NCERT has passed big sections of the history syllabus, and it has restructured many chapters on the Mughal period and the Delhi Sultanate, while focusing on the country’s tribal contributions, the achievements and ancient history of Indian scientists.

NCERT published the Grade 8th social science textbook exploring society, India and beyond as part of this change. The book blends history, geography, governance and economic life to assist children in creating a multidisciplinary understanding of events from the 13th to the mid-19th century developed under NCF-SE 2023.

To hold clarity and balance, the textbook adds a section titled “A Note on History’s Darker Period”, which guides students and summarises sensitive themes in understanding complicated historical tales.

Vocational Education from Class 6

In line with NEP’s emphasis on skill-based education, NCERT has introduced vocational subjects from Class 6 onwards, making early vocational exposure a key part of middle-stage learning.

Special Modules on Operation Sindoor

NCERT has added two new modules on Operation Sindoor for students from Classes 3 to 12. The modules present the operation as a coordinated military effort and a patriotic mission to safeguard national peace, while honouring the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.

The content states that although Pakistan denied involvement, the attack occurred on the “direct orders” of Pakistan’s military and political leadership. NCERT introduced these supplementary learning modules more than three months after the operation.

New Swadeshi Module Introduced

NCERT has also launched a dedicated “Swadeshi” module for middle and secondary classes to promote self-reliance. Drawing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vocal for local message, the module encourages students to support Indian-made products and highlights the link between self-reliance and national strength.

Bridge Programmes for Key Grades

NCERT has rolled out bridge programmes for Grades 1, 3, 5, 6 & 8 to simplify academic transitions, and these courses align with NCF-FS 2022, NCF-SE 2023 and NEP 2020.

Online Diploma in Teaching of Science

NCERT has opened admissions for its fully online Diploma in Teaching of Science for middle-stage teachers. Priced at Rs 2,000, the course offers multimedia-based modules for pre-service and in-service educators teaching Classes 6 to 8. While it strengthens conceptual understanding, it does not count as a recruitment qualification or exemption. Applicants can apply via www.ncertx.in and must use the same email ID during the process.

New Textbooks for 2025–26

NCERT has published updated textbooks for Grades 4, 5, 7 & 8 for the 2025–26 academic year, following the establishment of new books for Classes 1, 2, 3 & 6 in 2024–25. These textbooks contain revised content throughout Maths, Science, Languages, Social Sciences, Arts, Physical Education, and Vocational Education. New textbooks include:

  • Class 5: Santoor (English), Sitar (Urdu), Veena (Hindi)
  • Class 8: Malhar (Hindi), Poorvi (English), Curiosity (Science), Exploring Society (Social Science), Kriti (Art Education), Khayal (Urdu), Kaushal Bodh (Vocational Education)

NCERT plans to launch textbooks for Grades 9 to 12 by 2026–27, completing the countrywide shift to the NEP-aligned system. With new subjects, multiple learning modules, and revised history content, the next 2 academic years will mark a vital transition stage for children, teachers & schools in India.
